On June 24, bestselling author and journalist Douglas Murray joined Fox 11 LA anchor Elex Michaelson at the Nixon Library for a timely and wide-ranging conversation on Israel, Iran, and the broader challenges facing the Western world.
Their discussion offered a sweeping review of current global and domestic headlines—including regime change in Iran, the threat of nuclear proliferation, civil unrest in Los Angeles, protests on college campuses, and the New York mayoral race. Throughout, Murray connected these events to themes explored in his latest book, On Democracies and Deathcults: Israel and the Future of Civilization.
Asked what lessons from President Nixon’s worldview are relevant today, Murray emphasized the importance of steady, strategic leadership:
“To my mind, one of the singular things about real political leadership is to have a clear, determined policy and to see it through—whatever the day-to-day problems that emerge. President Nixon certainly saw that in his foreign policy and other policies.”
Murray also spoke about what he describes as a growing ideological divide between the Western world and what he calls a “death cult ideology,” based on his experience as a reporter on the front lines. Despite these challenges, he expressed optimism about the future, pointing to civics education as the key to resilience and renewal. In Murray’s words, “If you educate people well—if you raise them with a real and deep love of their country, their faith, their family, their tradition—then, if they get tested as our forebears were, they can step up too.”
