DESCRIPTION:Only One China? – The Shanghai Communique in the Age of Trump\nIt has been 45 years since President and Mrs. Richard Nixon landed in the People’s Republic of China – the first great crack in the Cold War. \nPresident Donald Trump recently affirmed the One China Policy – after some skepticism – which is the basis of the Shanghai Communique\, the overarching framework of Sino-U.S. relations since 1972. \nConsidering contemporary circumstances\, can Americans expect the basic elements of the Shanghai Communique – and President Nixon’s larger Chinese legacy – to live on in the Age of Trump? \nPARTICIPANTS: \nKarl Eikenberry is the Oksenberg-Rohlen Fellow and Director of the U.S.-Asia Security Initiative at Stanford University’s Asia-Pacific Research Center\, and a Stanford University Professor of Practice. He served as the U.S. Ambassador to Afghanistan from May 2009 until July 2011 and had a 35-year career in the United States Army\, retiring with the rank of lieutenant general. \nJohn Pomfret served as a correspondent for the Washington Post for many years\, and was a Fulbright Senior Scholar living in Beijing. He is the author of the acclaimed book\, “Chinese Lessons: Five Classmates and the Story of the New China\,” and has won several awards for his coverage of Asia\, including the Osborne Elliot Prize. He’s also the author of the newly published book\, “The Beautiful Country and the Middle Kingdom: America and China\, 1776 to the Present.” He was also one of the first American students to go to China and study at Nanjing University\, and attended Singapore’s Institute of Southeast Asian Studies as a Fulbright Scholar. \nAmbassador J. Stapleton (Stape) Roy is a Distinguished Scholar and Founding Director Emeritus of the Kissinger Institute on China and the United States at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington\, DC. During a career focused on East Asia and the Soviet Union\, Roy’s ambassadorial assignments included Singapore\, China\, and Indonesia. His final post with the State Department was as Assistant Secretary for Intelligence and Research. \nClayton Dube heads the USC U.S.-China Institute. It focuses on the multidimensional and evolving U.S.-China relationship and aims to inform public discussion on the importance and evolving nature of that relationship. DESCRIPTION:Panel: Nixon’s Grand Strategy: How the 37th President Shaped America’s Role in the World \nFREE EVENT ADMISSION \nWhen a new President of the United States is inaugurated\, what tools does he use and what strategies does he employ to accomplish his vision and policy goals for the country – and the world? \nA revealing presentation featuring senior White House national security officials\, as well as noted Cold War historians\, sheds light on these crucial aspects of leadership and statecraft – and how they continue to impact every American today. \nWhite House National Security aides and Cold War scholars will discuss President Nixon’s statesmanship\, and how he envisioned America’s role as world leader\, and its relations with other great powers. \nTopics will include the evolution of RN’s thinking on foreign policy and governing philosophy\, and how he ultimately dealt with the global challenges of the time — from the opening of China\, and arms control and detente with the Soviet Union\, to the end of the Vietnam War and establishing a road map for Middle East peace. \nRichard V. Allen\nSenior fellow of the Hoover Institution\, Stanford. Head of the foreign affairs issues team during the 1968 Nixon campaign\, and senior member of the National Security Council in the Nixon administration. In 1971\, he became deputy of the newly created Council on International Economic Policy. He went on to serve as national security advisor to President Ronald Reagan. \nNiall Ferguson\nSenior fellow of the Hoover Institution\, Stanford\, and a senior fellow of the Center for European Studies\, Harvard. He is also a visiting professor at Tsinghua University\, Beijing\, and the Diller-von Furstenberg Family Foundation Distinguished Scholar at the Nitze School of Advanced International Studies in Washington\, DC. He is the author of fourteen books including “Kissinger\, 1923-1968: The Idealist.” He is currently at work on his second volume of the acclaimed Kissinger biography. \nWinston Lord\nSpecial Assistant on the White House National Security Council\, and accompanied President Nixon and Dr. Kissinger on the historic trips to China and Russia. He went on to serve as State Department director of policy planning under President Nixon\, president of the Council on Foreign Relations\, ambassador to the People’s Republic of China under President Ronald Reagan and assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs. \nLuke Nichter\nAssociate professor of history at Texas A&M University – Central Texas\, and a noted expert on President Nixon’s 3\,451 hours of White House tapes. He is a New York Times bestselling author/editor of six books\, including Richard Nixon and Europe: The Reshaping of the Postwar Atlantic World and\, with historian Douglas Brinkley\, of the two volume The Nixon Tapes. \nGregory Daddis\, Moderator\nAssociate professor of history\, director of Chapman University’s MA Program in War and Society\, and author. He joined the Chapman University History Department in the summer of 2015 after having served as the Chief of the American History Division in the Department of History at the United States Military Academy at West Point. The public is invited to watch the C-SPAN stream free of charge in the Library’s 300-seat newly renovated Theater 37. \nGuests will also enjoy 2-for-1 admission to the museum all day. \nAdditionally\, the Nixon Library will display – for the first time – the 1969 Inauguration Day coats worn by First Lady Pat Nixon\, Tricia Nixon Cox and Julie Nixon Eisenhower. \nA collection of Inauguration Day artifacts will also be on display\, including Inaugural invitations\, press passes and ceremony tickets from FDR to Obama. \nDoors open at 8:00 a.m. The live broadcast at the Nixon Library will air until 5:00 p.m.

This includes the family of the first American to lose his life in Vietnam\, Technical Sergeant Richard Bernard Fitzgibbon\, Jr. USAF. \nNHRA funny car world champion “Fast Jack” Beckman will present the personalized ornaments to the families. Air Force Col. Wayne Scott (Retired) will moderate the program. \n2 PM – Special Film Screening \nSpecial screening of They Were Our Fathers\, a documentary filmed at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington D.C.\, as hundreds of children\, now men and women\, who lost their fathers during the Vietnam War honor their dads on Father’s Day with a special ceremony and remembrances left at The Wall. \nBoth events are free and open to the public. DESCRIPTION:Opening of the New Nixon Library\n11AM – OPENING CEREMONY \nJoin the Nixon family\, friends\, elected officials\, former Nixon administration officials\, and dozens of benefactors who made the New Nixon Library possible\, and celebrate the Opening! \nDr. Henry Kissinger\, California Governors Pete Wilson and Arnold Schwarzenegger\, U.S. Archivist David Ferriero and President and Mrs. Nixon’s grandchildren Christopher Cox and Melanie Eisenhower will officially open the New Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Museum at a free public ceremony on Oct. 14 beginning at 11:00 a.m. \nAlso on hand will be Ed Nixon\, President Nixon’s youngest brother; U.S. Rep. Ed Royce (R-Fullerton)\, chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee; Ron Walker\, chairman of the Richard Nixon Foundation; and Fred Malek\, chairman of the Nixon Centennial Legacy Campaign\, that raised funds to create the new museum. The opening ceremony will include musical performances by the USC Trojan Marching Band\, a Presentation of the Colors by the Los Angeles Air Force Base Honor Guard and a commemorative flyover by a squadron featuring a WWII C-53 Skytrooper plane that flew on D-Day. \nThe new museum will open immediately after the ceremony. Tours are self-guided.\nFree admission all day. \nReservations to the ceremony are encouraged but not required. Seats will be offered to guests who arrive on a first-come-first-serve-basis; a reservation does not guarantee a seat. \n6 PM – EVENING AT THE WHITE HOUSE CONCERT \nWhile bands and performers will entertain throughout the day\, take the evening with friends and family to enjoy a Nixon White House tradition with the sunset as your backdrop. \nSIGN UP TO ATTEND OPENING DAY \n
